Workgroup Networking -Lesson1

Requirement for Workgroup Networking:


Required Steps:


1. Setting workgroup name. (Workgroup name must be same in all computers.)


2. Setting an IP address. (must be different in all computers)


3. (Optional) Sharing Files and folder.


4. (Optional) Check Network using Ping command.


5. (Optional) Chatting through DOS using net send command.


Required hardware:


1. UTP/STP Cable category (different category has different speed, CAT6 would be fine.)


2. Crimping UTP/STP cable: Straight Through


3. Network card (Only required for old desktop computers. For new desktop computer and Laptops, they have already got it.)


4. Hub/Switch (For networking many computers)


5. Hub (not required if you are going to do networking directly between TWO computers, Use cross crimping UPT cable)



Steps for WORKGROUP Networking
(Networking between Two or More Computers)


Computer -1 (If you have XP/vista/server2003)


Step 1 Setting Workgroup Name
[We are going to use workgroup name as MYOFFICE]




  • Right click on My Computer / then click Properties /then Computer Name /Change


  • Give the computer name: Computer1


  • Click on Workgroup and give the name : MYOFFICE


  • Click ok and it will restart.

[If you have Windows 7 as a Operating System then ...]




  • My computer /Properties /Advanced System Setting


  • Then select Computer Name /click on Change


  • in Computer name: COMPUTER1


  • In the Workgroup: MYOFFICE
    (Note: In windows7, workgroup is already given as WORKGROUP by default, so in this case, to do networking the entire computer must have same workgroup name as "WORKGROUP”)

Step 2 Setting IP address




  • Right click on My Network Places / Then click Properties


  • Right click on Local area connection / Properties


  • Click on Use the following IP address:


  • IP address : 192.168.1.1


  • Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0


  • Default gateway : 192.168.1.1 (Note: in Default gate use 192.168.1.1 only if you have internet, because internet gateway begins mostly with following 192.168.1.1 if you don’t have internet then leave it empty


  • Click OK


  • In General tab again Tick Mark on (Show icon in notification area when connected


  • Finished.

[If you have Windows 7 Operating System then ...]




  • My computer /Properties / Change adapter setting


  • Double click on Local Area Connection /Properties


  • Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPV4)


  • Click on Use the following IP address


  • IP address : 192.168.1.1


  • Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0


  • Default gateway : 192.168.1.1

Computer-2


Step 1 Setting Workgroup Name




  • Right click on My Computer /then click Properties /Computer Name /Change


  • Give the computer name: Computer2


  • Click on Workgroup and give the name MYOFFICE


  • Click ok And it will restart.

Step 2 Setting IP address




  • Right click on My Network Places /Properties


  • Right click on Local area connection /Properties


  • Click on Use the following IP address:


  • IP address : 192.168.1.2 (different)


  • Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 (same)


  • Default Gateway :192.168.1.1 (same , use only if you have internet)


  • Click OK


  • In General tab again Tick Mark on (Show icon in notification area when connected)

Computer 3


Step 1: Setting Workgroup Name




  • Follow same process change only…


  • Give computer name: Computer3


  • Workgroup name must be same MYOFFICE.

Step 2: Setting IP address




  • Follow same process


  • IP address : 192.168.1.3 (different)


  • Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0 (same)


  • Default gateway : 192.168.1.1 (same , use only if you have internet)

Computer-4 , Computer-5 …. Follow the same process as above Finished. Well done you have just completed networking.
