What is MAC addresss?

What is MAC addresss?
IP address: (Internet Protocol)
· This is also known as logical address.
· IP address allows operating system to be able to communicate with each other.
· For a computer to be able to function in the network it must be installed with a network card and must be set with a proper IP address.

IP address can be set in two ways:-
1. Statically (Manually)
2. Dynamically (Automatically through a DHCP server)

What is MAC addresss?Every computer in the network must have the same network ID and unique Host ID (different Host ID). If the network ID is different the communication will not occur and if Host ID were to be same then communication will not occur.

What is MAC addresss?
Subnet mask
· After setting IP address the subnet mask is automatically set.
· It helps us identify the Network ID and Host ID of the IP address.
· Also in high level networking it is used for subnetting where we can transfer the network bits to host bit to increase the number of hosts in the network.

(Note: subnet will represent 255 for Network ID and 0 for Host ID.)
